Liberty University — Division I Men's Soccer

It started with one coach admitting he was afraid.

A Division I programme, mid-season, carrying fear it had no language for. What changed was not tactical.

The starting point

In early 2025, Liberty University Men's Soccer was at a crossroads: strong athletes, committed coaches and a proud institution — alongside fear, inconsistency, emotional pressure and a lack of internal unity.

What began as a mentoring relationship with Head Coach Kelly Findley evolved into a programme-wide change in identity, leadership, emotional honesty, communication and match-day performance.

Work with the head coach

Kelly entered the season carrying real internal weight: the pressure of leading a Division I programme, fear of not meeting expectations, tension between his inner truth and external demands, and moments of isolation and doubt.

The work focused on four things:

This wasn't sport psychology. It was inner leadership development in real time. As Kelly changed internally, the emotional climate of the whole team shifted.

Integration across the roster

By mid-season the work expanded to the players:

The themes that changed the team

Fear to courage

Many players were living in quiet fear: of losing their spot, of mistakes, of disappointing family and coaches, of not being enough. Through ASCENDS and grounding work, that fear gave way to stability and freedom.

Shame to vulnerability

Shame thrives in silence. When vulnerability became safe, players began sharing their internal truth, releasing emotional pressure, and playing with honesty rather than suppression.

Identity to presence

Players detached from roles, external expectations, starting positions and old narratives — and stepped into having nothing to prove. Under pressure, that changed everything.

In their words

When I lost my starting spot, your encouragement and perspective changed everything. You helped me through the hardest patches with truth and clarity. — Liberty player
It was the safest space to share my deepest fears — and still be met with truth, not judgment. — Liberty player

Not tactics. Not formations. Not athletic training. What changed was presence, courage, emotional honesty, internal unity and conscious accountability — alongside improved decision-making under pressure and greater composure.

Why programmes choose this work

Most Division I environments have strength, conditioning, analysis and sport psychology. Very few have sustained, human mentorship that works on identity and emotional honesty at both coach and player level — delivered in real time, across a season, by someone who has lived inside elite sport.

Closing

Liberty's 2025 season stands as evidence that when athletes and coaches operate from honesty rather than fear, performance becomes an expression of inner freedom.

The work didn't just help Liberty improve results. It changed who they became as leaders, teammates and men.
