The question underneath the career.

Six years. NCAA champion, WSL defender, AFCON champion, national honouree. None of that is what the work was about.

The external success, the internal divide

When our work began, Ashleigh was already competing at an elite level: England youth international, NCAA National Champion with USC, and a future Women's Super League defender with Leicester City.

Her trajectory was remarkable. Behind the achievements was a quieter conflict — a tension between public excellence and private questions of identity, belonging, purpose and peace. As she rose into global recognition, representing Nigeria and carrying heritage on the world stage, the expectations increased and so did the complexity.

The starting point was simple and profound:

Who am I becoming through all of this?

A human process, not a programme

Over six years the work unfolded through hundreds of hours of dialogue, honest confrontation, emotional exploration, identity work, and holding space for truths rarely spoken in elite sport.

No templates. No one-size-fits-all techniques. This was human work, not performance hacking — and it became part of the foundation for what later became ASCENDS. At the time it was simply two people exploring truth, fear, identity and potential.

The themes

Identity and heritage

Working through layers of culture, representation and belonging — especially as her connection to Nigeria deepened — required real courage and emotional clarity.

Perfectionism and vulnerability

Dismantling the belief that worth is tied to doing everything flawlessly.

Emotional honesty

Learning to articulate what she once carried alone.

Inner freedom

Trading control for trust, pressure for presence.

Leadership through authenticity

Leadership emerging not from status, but from sincerity, empathy and lived values.

What changed

Outcomes

AFCONAfrica Cup of Nations champion with Nigeria
OONOrder of the Niger — a Nigerian national honour
NCAANational champion with USC
WSLProfessional with Leicester City

Alongside these: a grounded, coherent sense of identity. Emotional honesty and self-respect. Clear, values-led decision-making. Leadership rooted in humility, presence and connection.

These accomplishments were not the goal of the work. They were the expression of a more aligned human being.

In her words

For me, the greatest example of an authentic being. Truly one of the most rare and real people I have ever come across — and I will forever be indebted to him for the impact he has had on and off the field. — Ashleigh Plumptre OON

What this reveals

Performance is the outer expression of inner alignment. When identity, emotion, truth and purpose align, excellence follows naturally.

Her journey shows the power of long-term human connection, the necessity of safe and non-judgemental space, and the depth that emerges when an athlete is supported as a whole human being.

This case study is ultimately not about football. It's about what becomes possible when a person is finally free to grow.
